  Good morning. There came a man sent from God, whose name was John. This tells us that John had a divine calling on his life. Why did he come? He came as a witness, to testify about the Light, so that all might believe through him. You have to know about something to testify about it - you don’t just read about it in a book. He was not the Light, but he came to testify about the Light. He knew his position and his calling – he did not try to take the place of Jesus. There was the true Light which, coming into the world, enlightens every man. There have been many false lights over the ages. There was only one true One. He was in the world, and the world was made through Him, and the world did not know Him. They had been looking for the Messiah for thousands of years, and they did not recognize Him when He was standing in their presence. But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, even to those who believe in His name. That s...

  Good morning. Now we start what is probably my favorite book – John. There is only a little bit of duplication with the other Gospels. In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. That is so compact, and includes everything that you need to know about the Father and the Son. I forget the different heresies that it denies. A little different wording and it  could be translated that the Son was a god – not the God. Again a little different wording, and it  could be  translated that the Father and the Son were the same. He was in the beginning with God. Even  before the beginning of time, Jesus was with the Father. All things came into being through Him, and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being. In Him was life, and the life was the Light of men. John used so many descriptive phrases for Jesus and the Light was one of them.   Good morning. So the two men return to Jerusalem, and find the 11 apostles together. The Lord has really risen and has appeared to Simon. They told the apostles what had happened. While they were telling all about these things, Jesus Himself stood in their midst and said to them “Peace to you”. Of course the apostles were not going to believe someone who told them such an incredible thing. They probably believed they were imagining things in their grief. Even though Jesus was standing right there, they still did not believe – they thought they were seeing a ghost. Of course we would probably be the same or worse. Why are you troubled, and why do doubts arise in your hearts? See My hands and feet? Touch Me and see; for a spirit does not have flesh and bones as you see that I have. That gives us an idea of how we will be one day. While they still could not believe it because of their joy and amazement, He said to them, have you anything here to eat? They gave Him ...

  Good morning. Now we have two men on the road to Emmaus. They were talking about all that just happened – the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus. Jesus approached and began traveling with them. But their eyes were prevented from recognizing Him. He wanted to know what they were talking about. Are You the only one visiting Jerusalem and unaware of the things which have happened in these days? Jesus innocently – what things? “Jesus from Nazareth, who was a prophet mighty in deed and word in the sight of God and all the people. They had not come to recognize Him as the Christ”. They were still thinking of Him as just a great man of God. “But we were hoping that it was He who was going to redeem Israel”. They were still thinking of Him as a conquering hero, not the one who was going to die for their sins. They then tell about the women who went to the tomb and did not find the body of Jesus. They said they had seen a vision of angels who said that He was alive. W...

  Good morning. They go to the Mount of Olives. Luke is very similar to Matthew and Mark concerning the garden and Jesus being arrested. Then Jesus is brought before Pilate. Then they take Him to Golgotha to be crucified. The women prepared spices and perfumes for His body. Luke does not say how many there are; but they all come on the first day of the week at early dawn bringing the spices which they had prepared. The stone is rolled away, and they enter the tomb; but they do not find the body of Jesus. Two men suddenly stood near them in dazzling clothing. Why do you seek the living One among the dead? He is not here, but He has risen. They go to tell the disciples, but of course they do not believe them. Peter goes to the tomb and finds it empty. Father thank You that whatever we need, You supply us. Keep us and our family safe.

  Good morning. Jesus said to Peter, Simon, Simon, behold, Satan has demanded permission to sift you like wheat. (sounds like the devil talking to God about Job). I have heard speakers saying that that was applied to Peter. There are two things wrong with that statement. First, the word you is the plural you. Second, it’s very hard to sift one item. So Jesus was talking about the entire group of disciples. But in the next part, He switches to the singular you. But I have prayed for you (talking just to Peter), that your faith may not fail; and you, when you have turned again, strengthen your brothers. Jesus did not pray that Peter would not be tempted; but that when he fell, we would rise again stronger than ever before. Peter of course says he will even die with Jesus; and Jesus tells Peter that he will deny Him three times. When I sent you out without anything, you did not lack anything, did you?   Good  morning. The disciples prepare what Luke says is the Passover. I have earnestly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer; for I say to you, I shall never again eat it until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God. We then have the bread and wine. For indeed, the Son of Man is going as it has been determined; but woe to that man by whom He is betrayed! It was a done deal. Everything had been predetermined before the beginning of time. Now we would not like that – that something that important in our lives had been predetermined, and we had no say so in what was to happen. (now Jesus could have refused; but He could not change any one thing because the Scriptures had to be fulfilled.) Here Jesus is about to go through horrible suffering and death and what do His disciples do – there arose a dispute among them as to which one of them was regarded to be the greatest. You are those who have stood by Me in My trials; and just as My Father has grant...

  Good morning. Just when things look like they couldn’t get any worse – then they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. But when these things begin to happen, straighten up and lift up your heads, because your redemption is drawing near. It’s like the fig trees; as soon as they put forth leaves, you see it and know for yourselves that summer is now near. So you also, when you see these things happening, recognize that the kingdom of God is near. So it should not come as a surprise when it happens. Truly I say to you, this generation will not pass away until all things take place. First of all, the phrase “will not pass away” is a double negative which I’ve said before in Greek means it is a certainty that it will not happen. Second, as I also have said before, the phrase “all things take place” probably should be translated “all things begin to take place”. What are we to do – be on our guard. We have to be sure that we do not get...

  Good morning. We then have the triumphal entry into Jerusalem. Jesus goes into the temple and throws out those who were selling. Then He tells the parable about the man who owns a vineyard and rented it out to some vine growers. Eventually they killed his son. All of this we have seen before. Now we get to Luke chapter 21. This is Luke’s version of Jesus’ prophecy about the end times. He tells the disciples that not one stone will be left upon another. They want to know when this will happen, and what will be the sign that it is about to happen. He says many of the same things that Matthew and Mark said. He talks about all the different things that will happen in nature and between peoples. Disciples will be put in prison and go on trial; but do not worry about what you will say because the Holy Spirit will give you the words. Some of things that Jesus talked about apply to the times around 70 A.D.; but a lot of the words are yet to be fulfilled. There some word...

  Good morning. As Jesus was approaching Jericho, a blind man was sitting by the road begging. In Matthew, it was two blind men, and it was as they were leaving Jericho not approaching it. In Mark, it was also as they were leaving Jericho coming from beyond the Jordan, and it was blind Bartimaeus that received his sight. All three of these cases plus the one with Lazarus were shortly before Palm Sunday; so they were all within the same timeframe. Jesus enters Jericho (I believe coming from beyond the Jordan) and was passing through. There was a man named Zacchaeus, he was a chief tax collector - he was rich! He tried to see who Jesus was, but he could not because he was too short. It is possible that the crowd was there because Jesus had just healed that blind man. He climbed up a tree in order that he could see Jesus. (right now that song about Zacchaeus that you used to sing when you were a child is going through your head and won’t get out of it – ha ha ha!)....

  Good morning. Jesus told this parable to some people who trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and viewed others with contempt: two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. The Pharisee stood and was praying this to himself (He definitely was not praying to God): God, I thank you that I am not like other people; swindlers, unjust, adulterers, or even like this tax collector. I fast twice a week; I pay tithes of all I get. His righteousness consisted of all the religious things that he did for God. This kind of person defines righteousness in such a way that he or she definitely excels in those acts versus those around him or her. But that tax collector, standing some distance away, was even unwilling to lift up his eyes to heaven, but was beating his breast, saying, God be merciful to me the sinner. All of our righteousness is as filthy rags. I tell you, this man went to his house justified rather than the other; fo...

  Good morning. Jesus was telling them a parable to show that at all times they ought to pray and not to lose heart. There was a judge who did not fear God and did not respect man. There was a widow in the city, and she kept coming to him, saying, give me legal protection from my opponent. For a while he was unwilling; but afterword he said to himself, even though I do not fear God nor respect man, yet because this widow bothers me, I will give her legal protection, otherwise by continually coming she will wear me out. Hear what the unrighteous judge said. Will not God bring about justice for His elect who cry to Him day and night, and will He delay long over them? However, when the Son of Man comes, will He find faith on the earth? There may be times when it seems like God will not bring about justice for His children. Remember that He is always faithful, even when we are not. Father help us at all times to pray and to not lose heart, even when it seems like You...

  Good morning. There was a rich man, and he normally dressed in fine clothes, joyously living in splendor every day. And a poor man named Lazarus was laid at his gate, covered with sores. Notice that the rich man is never named, but the poor man is. The phrase covered with sores is a common medical term, and of course this is written by Luke the physician. Now the poor man died and was carried away by the angels to Abraham’s bosom; and the rich man also died and was buried. What a contrast in what happened to each after they died. This was before the cross, so shouldn’t it be at least this good, if not better now? In Hades he lifted up his eyes, being in torment, and saw Abraham far away and Lazarus with him. Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus so that he may dip the tip of his finger in water and cool off my tongue, for I am in agony in this flame.  Good morning. A rich man had a manager who was squandering his possessions. ( It doesn’t say how). Give an account of your management, for you can no longer be manager. What shall I do? I am not strong enough to dig; I am too ashamed to beg. I know what I shall do so people will welcome me into their homes. He summoned each of his master’s debtors. How much do you owe? 100 measures of oil. Take your bill and write 50. In other words, he had an I.O.U. that said I owe 100; and he changed it to I owe 50. He did a similar thing for another. His master praised him because he had acted shrewdly; for the sons of this age are more shrewd in relation to their own kind than the sons of light. I would have thought his master would have been angry. My Bible says the following is possible: it was against the Law of Moses to charge interest to fellow Jews. To get around that and still make money, you charged them more than it was worth. They couldn’t complain because of the ...

  Good morning. Back to the Prodigal: “Father, I have sinned against heaven and in your sight.” That’s strange. Wasn’t the sin against his father? Remember what David said, “Against You and You alone have I sinned.” And this was after not only Bathsheba, but also being responsible for her husband being killed. I wonder if he told her what he had done? Back to the Prodigal: his father never batted an eye. He told the servants to bring out the best suit - I mean the best robe, etc. They killed the fattened calf ( can anyone say Kobe beef?). They had the biggest block party ever seen! The older son had been working in the hot sun all day. He hears the celebration and wants to know what is going on. The servants tell him, and he gets very angry and pouty. He refuses to come celebrate. His father comes out to get him to come to the celebration. I never neglected a command of yours, and yet you never even gave me a young goat much less a fattened calf for me to celebr...

  Good morning. Skipping verses – some reported to Him about the Galileans whose blood Pilate had mixed with their sacrifices. Back then, and even now, people believed that when something bad happens to you it was because you did a great sin. Do you suppose that these Galileans were greater sinners than all other Galileans because they suffered this fate? I tell you, no, but unless you repent, you will all likewise perish (though He did not say it would be a horrific death). Or do you suppose that those 18 on whom the tower in Siloam fell and killed them were worse culprits than all the men who live in Jerusalem? I tell you, no, but unless you repent, you will likewise perish. Again, just because something bad happens to you does not mean that you are a bad person. On the other hand, the opposite is also true – just because something good happens to you does not mean that you were a good person. Then we have the parable about the prodigal son.   Good morning. Someone in the crowd said to Him, “teacher, tell my brother to divide the family inheritance with me.” Man, who appointed Me a judge or arbitrator over you? Beware, and be on your guard against every form of greed; for not even when one has an abundance does his life consist of his possessions. Of course that’s not the way most people behave – even Christians. People try to stockpile more and more things. They put their trust in their things, instead of God. What if all of their things were suddenly gone? Then what will they put their trust in? The land of a rich man was very productive. What shall I do, since I have no place to store my crops?   Good morning. Jesus travels on and comes to the village where Mary and Martha lived. Martha is the one who welcomes Him into the house. Her sister Mary was seated at the Lord’s feet, listening to His word. Martha was very busy getting everything ready for everyone to eat. And wouldn’t you know it, sis was not even helping her. Lord, do You not care that my sister has left me to do all the serving alone? Then tell her to help me. Martha, you are worried and bothered about so many things; but only one thing is necessary, for Mary has chosen the good part, which shall not be taken away from her. It is all too easy to get distracted with the every day cares of life and to neglect spiritual things. Some people will doggedly make sure that they do a certain amount of exercise each day, while neglecting to read their Bible or pray.   Good morning. So this dude was going from Jerusalem to Jericho and some robbers beat him up and left him for dead. And by chance a priest was going down that road, and when he saw him, he passed by on the other side. Likewise a Levite also, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side (he must’ve been going in the same direction or it would have just said that he passed him by and would not have said on the other side). It’s getting as busy as I-4 going towards Orlando. But a hated Samaritan, who was on a journey came to the place and saw him and felt compassion. It does not say in which direction the Samaritan was going. If he had been going the opposite direction, he would have seen the priest and the Levite and would now realize that they had not stopped to help the man. He bandaged his wounds, put him on his own beast, brought him to an inn and took care of him. It does not say how far away the inn was nor which direction. Remember th...

  Good morning. Then Jesus rejoiced greatly in the Holy Spirit, and said, “I praise You, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that You have hidden these things from the wise and intelligent and have revealed them to infants. Yes, Father, for this way was well-pleasing in Your sight. All things have been handed over to Me by My Father, and no one knows who the Son is except the Father, and who the Father is except the Son, and anyone to whom the Son wills to reveal Him.” Thankfully we were chosen to have these things revealed to us, and to know the Son and the Father. As we have seen in Matthew and Mark, a lawyer wants to test Jesus by asking what he should do to inherit eternal life. Jesus puts it back onto him. “What is written in the law?   Good morning. We have seen the following verse before; but my Bible has an interesting comment about it: “Follow Me.” “Lord, permit me first to go and bury my father.” If his father had already died, the man would have been occupied with the burial then ( Jews bury people right away). Evidently he wanted to wait until after his father‘s death, which might’ve been years away. Jesus appointed 70 others and sent them to every city to which He was coming. And now the verse that is like the one with the woman at the well and why it might be that Samaritan village: “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; therefore beseech the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest.” The 70 return saying, “Lord, even the demons are subject to us in Your name.” “I was watching Satan fall from heaven like lightning.   Good morning. Skipping a number of verses that are also in Matthew and Mark: when the days were approaching for His ascension, He was determined to go to Jerusalem. The word translated approaching means to be fulfilled. Just like before, it was the right time. He knew what was going to happen; yet He went to meet it head on. He sent messengers on ahead of Himself, and they entered a village of the Samaritans to make arrangements for Him. They did not receive Him, because He was traveling toward Jerusalem. A comment in my Bible: Samaritans were particularly hostile to Jews who were on their way to observe religious festivals in Jerusalem. It was at least a three day journey from Galilee to Jerusalem through Samaria, and Samaritans refused overnight shelter for the pilgrims. Because of this antipathy, Jews traveling between Galilee and Jerusalem frequently went on the east side of the Jordan River. That would have taken more than three days; because you had to go...

  Good morning. Jesus now talks to the multitude about John. “What did you go out into the  wilderness  to see? A reed shaken by the wind? One who is more than a prophet. Among those born of women there is  no  one greater than John; yet he who is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he.” John was the best that the Old Testament good get. If you are born again, then that is better than even John. The people acknowledged God‘s justice, having been baptized with the baptism of John. But the Pharisees and the lawyers rejected God‘s purpose for themselves, not having been baptized by John. Jesus then talks about the men of that generation. Nothing you did was right. “John came eating no bread and drinking no wine, and you say he has a demon! The Son of Man has come eating and drinking, and you say, a gluttonous man and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!” You can’t win for losing. Yet wisdom is vindicated by all her children....

  Good morning. Luke has basically the same things as Matthew and Mark for some verses. He went to a city called Nain. A dead man was being carried out, the only son of his mother, and she was a widow. Remember that this meant that she was in really big trouble. She had no one to help take care of her. According to my map, Nain was not very far from Nazareth. It is very likely that Jesus and His mother knew this lady. This possibility is brought out by the next verse: when the Lord saw her, He felt compassion for her, and said to her, “do not weep.” Jesus touched the coffin and said, “young man, I say to you, arise!” He sat up and began to speak. Jesus gave him back to his mother. The disciples of John reported this to him. He sent two of them to ask “are You the expected one or do we look for someone else?” “Tell John what you have seen and heard: the blind receive sight, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead raised up, the poor have the...

  Good morning. Remember that all of Jesus’ neighbors were saying good things about Him and then: No doubt you will quote this proverb to Me, physician heal yourself! Whatever we heard was done at Capernaum, do here in Your hometown as well. No prophet is welcome in his hometown. There were many widows in the land of Israel in the days of Elijah; but he was sent only to one in a foreign land. There were many lepers in Israel in the time of Elisha the prophet; but only one was cleansed, and he was a foreigner. Now everyone was madder than a wet hen 🐔 !They tried to throw Him down the cliff, but He passed through their midst and went on His way. Skipping some that is also in Matthew and Mark - Luke gives the beatitudes. There is one verse that is unique to him. Give, and it will be given to you. They will pour into your lap a good measure – pressed down, shaken together, and running over. For by your standard of measure it will be measured to you in return. What ...

  Good morning. After His baptism, Jesus, being full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led around by the Spirit in the wilderness. Matthew also said He was led by the Holy Spirit; Mark says He was impelled by the Holy Spirit. Luke then goes through the temptations of Jesus by the devil. After resisting the temptations, Jesus returned to Galilee in the power of the Spirit. He went to His hometown of Nazareth; went to the synagogue on the Sabbath; and stood up to read. They gave Him the book of Isaiah, and He found the place where it was written: The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me; because He anointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor. He sent Me to proclaim release to the captives, and recovery of sight to the blind, to set free those who are oppressed, to proclaim the favorable year of the Lord. Today this scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing. That was a very bold statement, because it applied to the Messiah. After all He was the homet...

  Good morning. The word of God comes to John the Baptist. And he came into all the district around the Jordan preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. Luke has a lot of the same things that Matthew and Mark have about this. Therefore bear fruits in keeping with repentance, and do not begin to say to yourselves, we have Abraham for our father, for I say to you that from these stones God is able to raise up children to Abraham. The people wanted to know what John meant by this. The man who has two tunics is to share with him who has none; and he who has food is to do likewise. The tax collectors were to collect no more than what they were ordered to. The soldiers were to not take money from anyone by force, or to accuse anyone falsely, and to (gasp) be content with their wages. I bet if the pastor said to people right before they were baptized do you promise to do all of these things? There would not be very many wanting to be baptized. Jesu...

  Good morning. Every year Jesus and His family went to Jerusalem at the feast of the Passover. The one we are interested in was when He was 12. When they left, they did not know that He stayed behind. They assumed that He was in the caravan. It must’ve been pretty big for them to not see that He was not with the group; and it also must’ve been a common occurrence in these trips that He was with others. They finally realized that He’s not with them, so they returned to Jerusalem to look for Him. After three days they find Him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the teachers, both listening to them, and asking them questions. Someone has said that it is possible that one of the three days was the one before they discovered He was missing; then part or all of the second day would’ve been taken up in walking back. It is possible that one of the teachers was Nicodemus. All who heard Him were amazed at His understanding and His answers. Of course His mom is upset an...

  Good morning. When eight days were completed before His circumcision, His name was then called Jesus, the name given by the angel before He was conceived in the womb. Again we see that it was eight days before He was officially named. When the days for their purification were completed, they brought Him up to Jerusalem to present Him to the Lord. When we talk about going up to someplace, it usually means that that place is more less north of us, but not always. When they were talking about going up, they meant elevation. Jerusalem was up from just about everywhere. So they may have gone back to Nazareth, or they may have stayed in Bethlehem. There was a man named Simeon who was looking for the consolation of Israel; and the Holy Spirit was upon him. It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord’s Christ. He came in the Spirit, took Jesus into his arms, blessed God and spoke.   Good morning. A census is to be taken. Everyone was going to his own city to register. Mary and Joseph were going to Bethlehem because he was of the house and family of David. While they were there the days were completed for her to give birth. (everything at just the right time). And she gave birth to her firstborn son; and she wrapped Him in cloths, and laid Him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn. Notice that it says firstborn and not only begotten son. There is a denomination that believes that she only had one child – Jesus. If there is a firstborn, then there must be a second one. Then we have the shepherds in the fields watching over their flocks by night. An angel appears and tells them that in the city of David there is been born for you a Savior who is Christ the Lord. He gives them a sign that they will find the baby in a manger. Suddenly as if they could not wait any longer, a multitude of the heavenly host appeared praising God: “...
