In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth

Good morning. We have finished the New Testament, and now are going to the beginning of the Bible - to the book of Genesis. If someone asked you to give a one sentence description of the creation, there would be no better one than the first sentence in the Bible. In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. That’s all we need to know. God did it! In the beginning God did it. That means that God existed before “the beginning”. The human mind can project infinitely forward; everything just keeps on keeping on. But I don’t believe that it can project infinitely into the past. To the human mind, everything has to have a beginning point; but to go infinitely into the past would mean there was never ever a beginning point. However far back do you say it is, that’s not infinite. I once had my students to ask their friends and relatives to give them an example of an infinite set. One student said that her little brother’s idea of an infinite set was a gumball machine. To him that was an infinite set. God always has existed, and then came the beginning. Even if you say there was this primordial gas or whatever that collected together and had a big bang; where did that gas or whatever come from? God would have to have created it. And of course we cannot leave this discussion without remembering John chapter 1. In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God and the Word was God. So in the beginning when God created the heavens and the earth, the Son was there also. Father thank You that we don’t have to understand how everything happened to believe it when You say it.
