For the love of money is a root of all evils
Good morning. Paul then gives an admonition against stockpiling money: we have brought nothing into the world, so we cannot take anything out of it either. If we have food and covering, with these we shall be content. This goes against today’s thinking that one should stockpile as much money as possible for retirement. Of course in Paul’s day there was no such thing as “retirement“. We would never be content with just food and covering; however, in today’s world there are a lot of people that that is all they have. Continuing with Paul’s thought: those who want to get rich (that’s way beyond saving up money for retirement) fall into temptation and a snare and many foolish and harmful desires which plunge men into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is a (there is no article in front of “root” which in Greek normally, but not always, means it should be translated “a“) root of all evils, and some by longing for it have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs. In the book of Colossians, Paul talks about greed, which amounts to idolatry. Father thank You that You supply all of our needs. We will put our trust in You, not in our money.
