Know for certain that your descendants will be strangers in a land that is not theirs, where they will be enslaved and oppressed four hundred years
Good morning. When the sun was going down, a deep sleep fell upon Abram; and terror and great darkness fell upon him. God said to Abram, “Know for certain that your descendants will be strangers in a land that is not theirs, where they will be enslaved and oppressed four hundred years. The way this is translated, the 400 years seems to modify the enslavement, but does it in fact modify the time they will be in the land? After all, Exodus says they left Egypt 430 years to the day after they entered it. Or perhaps God starts counting the 400 years when Joseph went down to Egypt as a slave. But I will also judge the nation whom they serve, and afterward they will come out with many possessions. As for you, you shall go to your fathers in peace, you will be buried at a good old age. Then in the fourth generation they will return here, for the iniquity of the Amorite is not yet complete“. They were in Egypt for many years before the enslavement of the book of Exodus began; so it seems hard for them to return in only the fourth generation if they were enslaved 400 years. Father continue blessing and meeting the needs of the reader and his/her family.
