The angel tells him to not be afraid for “your petition has been heard, and your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you will give him the name John”.
Good morning. We are now ready to start Luke. Luke also has some passages that are almost identical to Matthew and Mark. He says that many had compiled accounts of the things that had happened, and that they had been handed down to them by those from the beginning who were eyewitnesses and servants of the word. Luke investigated everything carefully and wrote them down. Since Luke was a physician, he was ideal for the task. There was a priest named Zacharias with a wife named Elizabeth from the daughters of Aaron. Since he was a priest, he too was a direct descendent of Aaron. That meant that both of John the Baptist’s parents were direct descendants of Aaron the original high priest. That meant that if John the Baptist had followed in his father‘s footsteps, he would’ve also been a priest and possibly one of the chief priests (Who were the ones who condemned Jesus to death. He may even have saved Jesus from crucifixion, which is not what God wanted.) Elizabeth was barren and they were both old. Zacharias had been chosen by lot to enter the temple of the Lord and burn incense. This is just one of the many things that had to come together at just the right time for things to work out the way God wanted. An Angel appears to him, standing to the right of the altar of incense. The angel tells him to not be afraid for “your petition has been heard, and your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you will give him the name John”. They were both old, so it is unlikely that he was still petitioning for her to have a child. That means don’t give up just because your prayer has not been answered when you wanted it to be. It wasn’t the right time for them to have this child. Everything had to be just right. It was also a sign to Mary, which we will get to later. Father thank You that all of our prayers are answered at the right moment. Help us to keep trusting in You to answer our prayers.
