This people honors Me with their lips, but their heart is far away from Me

 Good morning. We are skipping some of the things that were also in Matthew. The kingdom of God is like a man who casts seed upon the soil; and he goes to bed at night and gets up by day, and the seed sprouts and grows – how, he himself does not know. The soil produces crops by itself; first the blade, then the head, then the mature grain in the head. But when the crop permits, he immediately puts in the sickle, because the harvest has come. Skipping a lot: after the feeding of the 5000 when the disciples were in the boat and Jesus was walking upon the water, Mark does not mention about Peter walking upon the water. The Pharisees noticed that some of His disciples were eating bread with impure hands, that is, unwashed. (He’s not talking about washing your hands with soap and water like we do. It was a ceremonial dipping into water.) The Pharisees and all the Jews do not eat unless they carefully wash their hands, thus observing the traditions of the elders. There were other traditions such as the washing of dishes. Again, this was not with soap and water. In fact the word translated washing is the same Greek word from which we get baptizing. The Pharisees wanted to know why His disciples did not walk according to the tradition of the elders, eating bread with impure hands. Jesus quoted scripture: this people honors Me with their lips, but their heart is far away from Me. But in vain they worship Me, teaching as doctrines the precepts of men. And of course we get that today – religious people come up with things that Christians should do or should not do. Too many times these things are just some legalistic way that these people think Christians should live their lives. Father thank You that You look at what is in a person‘s heart. Help us to follow after You diligently.

  Good morning. But even if you should suffer for the sake of righteousness, you are blessed. “And do not fear their intimidation and do not be troubled”. In Greek, the word “if“ has different degrees of significance unlike in English. My Bible says that in the Greek, this conditional clause (if you should suffer…) is the furthest removed from stating a reality. Suffering for righteousness is a remote possibility, but even if it does occur, it brings special blessing to the sufferer. All Christians wrestle with the question, “should I share the gospel with this person or not?“ The following verse tells us how we should do it: sanctify Christ as Lord in your hearts, always being ready to make a defense to everyone who asks you to give an account for the hope that is in you, yet with gentleness and reverence. To those, who are chosen according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, and by the sanctifying work of the Spirit, to obey Jesus Christ and be sprinkled with His blood

  Good morning. Today we begin with I Peter. Peter identifies himself as an apostle of Jesus. There was only one, so we know who is writing. To those who reside as aliens (believers are aliens to this world), scattered throughout (different places), who are chosen (we didn’t earn it) according to the foreknowledge (this comes from the same Greek word from which we get the medical term prognosis) of God the Father, and by the sanctifying work of the Spirit (this shows that the third Person of the Trinity is also involved), to obey Jesus Christ (which we are incapable of doing without being sanctified) and be sprinkled with His blood (all articles of worship in the tabernacle and then in the temple were sprinkled with the blood of animals – we are sprinkled with the blood of Jesus): may grace and peace be yours in the fullest measure.
